IIPSJ Community IP Development Program
IIPSJ has developed and funded special internships to enable HUSL students to provide legal research and support to public interest organizations such as The Association for the Study of African American Life and History, and the United Negro College Fund, in order to assist these institutions protect their intellectual property. IIPSJ has worked with the internationally renowned Twyla Tharp Dance Company to promote the works of legendary composer Fats Waller, and to insure proper attribution for his works.
IIPSJ is in the early stages of developing the IIPSJ IP Empowerment Program. Conceptually, the program would connect professionals with relevant expertise (including legal expertise, marketing expertise, and business development and entrepreneurial expertise) with members of the community involved in the creative arts, invention, and the lawful exploitation of intellectual property. The program would particularly target minority communities in the District of Columbia. IIPSJ plans to develop instructional and mentoring programs, to establish effective connections with the target communities, and to provide legal and business assistance at low or no cost to the target communities. Target communities include associations of artists, students in graduate school in engineering, students in fine arts school, community development associations, and the like.
